If we were looking down at the Earth right now we                                             would see a planet undergoing massive transition in technology, work, society and the planet itself. Many are aware of the problems we are facing as 40-70% of jobs are lost to automation by 2035, but not putting the pieces together in a way that allows us to think beyond today to plan for a successful 'post-work' future where soon humans may be seeing Earth not just from near-space, but from Mars and beyond.

  • TECH > Anxiety about how to keep up, choose and use tech properly is at an all time high. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is forecast to replace 40-70% of jobs in next 15 years, Bio-tech will soon see the functions of our smartphones implanted in our bodies, and as soon as space mining becomes feasible, immeasurable economic changes will begin to impact nations world-wide.
  • WORK > Permanent, fixed jobs are disappearing in what is becoming known as the 'Great Displacement' - but learning how to make one's own job as short-term work and consulting becomes the norm is no easy task. These changes are being driven by new tech such as AI, with the resulting job uncertainty and feelings of economic disadvantage leaving many to wonder what skills they really do need now.
  • LIFE and SOCIETY > As Work changes, this in turn creates growing social unrest that is already manifesting in political unpredictability and paralysis in many nations.
  • PLANET > In addition to rapid change in technology, work and society, changes to our living environments from population growth and pollution are accelerating loss of bio-diversity and sources of food and water
  • EDUCATION > The speed of technological change means Education is increasingly preparing students only for yesterday, with little hope of catching up.

FUTURE LITERACIES

What are the key building blocks that can allow Education to prepare the learners and future workers tomorrow will require? What future literacies should all missions and projects include so students and workers are prepared for the future that new technologies are ushering in? What are the areas that pioneers can immediately plugging their skills into?

FUTURE-U has created a highly-evolved and collaborative continuum that links best-practice ideas about 21st century learning to address the specific meta-skills today's students and workers will need to thrive. It has been designed as a continually refined star-map of the future literacies every future student and worker will need to be able to navigate and apply if they are to thrive tomorrow.

CREATIVITY

Why do students start school with a creativity rating of 100% but finish with 12%, especially when its been identified as one of THE key future skills? A focus on this literacy means students and workers will be able to have the big picture ‘metanoia’ perspective they will need.

> Incorporates open play, curiosity, harnessing failure, resilience, growth mindset and reflection

THINKING AND PLANNING SKILLS 

Even the most future-shaping ideas need to be planned out, assessed, filtered and considered - this element addresses this by tapping into ‘Agile thinking’ methods that encompass Design Thinking, Problem Solving, the SAMR model, Workflows, Self-leadership and more.

COMMUNITY

Having the best solution or project are great but to truly effect the future and have a lasting impact students and workers need to know how to be a vital member of their community, AND how to have that community support them back. This literacy also covers empathy, collaboration, user-centred design, networking and the essential questions and challenge parts of CBL. 


 

PROJECT DELIVERY 

Knowing how to think beyond tomorrow is great, but this needs to be applied and practiced via real life learning experiences that also incorporate entrepreneurial opportunities so students and workers can learn how to make projects self-sustaining with a real impact on their communities.

STORYTELLING 

The best solutions are useless if no one knows about them. Explaining, telling stories, building a brand and sharing in ways that connect with a wider world are the vital next step once projects are up and running.
